Lemon juice plays a dual role in this recipe: it enhances the flavor profile and helps preserve the apples from browning. The acidity of the lemon juice prevents the oxidation process, which can turn your beautiful apple slices brown and unappealing. Additionally, the zesty flavor of lemon complements the sweetness of the apples and the warmth of cinnamon, creating a delightful balance that makes each bite irresistible.

Ingredients

2 large apples (preferably Fuji or Honeycrisp)

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon sugar (or a sugar substitute)

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 300°F (150°C) for about 5 minutes while you prepare the apples.

    Prepare the Apples:

      - Wash and dry the apples thoroughly.

        - Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, slice the apples into thin rounds (about 1/8 inch thick). Make sure to remove the seeds and any core as you slice.

          Season the Slices:

            - In a large bowl, combine the cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice, and salt.

              - Toss the apple slices in the cinnamon mixture until they are evenly coated.

                Air Fry the Chips:

                  - Place the seasoned apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might have to do this in batches.

                    - Air fry the apple slices for 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway through for even cooking. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning; cook until they are crispy and golden brown.

                      Cool and Serve:

                        - Once cooked, remove the apple chips from the air fryer and let them cool on a wire rack. This will help them become even crisper as they cool down.

                          - Serve them as a healthy snack, or use them as a garnish on salads or desserts.
