Ingredients

For the Filling:

4 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Bramley work well), peeled, cored, and sliced

2 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen, if out of season)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional for extra thickening)

For the Crumble Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavor in the topping

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the fruit filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, blackberries, granulated sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss gently until the fruit is well coated and let it sit for about 10 minutes to macerate.

Make the crumble topping: In another bowl, mix the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add the cubed butter to the mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If you like, stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.

Assemble the crumble: Pour the fruit mixture into a greased 9x9 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly. Then, sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit mixture, ensuring it's evenly distributed.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.

Serve: Let the crumble cool for a few minutes before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
