Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, sliced thick

4 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup apple pie filling (homemade or store-bought)

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing the baking dish)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with the unsalted butter to prevent sticking.

Arrange the Bread: Layer half of the thick slices of brioche or challah bread in the greased dish. Ensure they cover the bottom completely.

Mix the Custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.

Add Apple Filling: Spoon the apple pie filling over the layer of bread, ensuring an even distribution. If desired, sprinkle the chopped pecans on top for added crunch.

Layer More Bread: Place the remaining slices of bread on top of the apple filling and pecans. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread layers, gently pressing down the bread so that it absorbs the liquid.

Soak: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it soak in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or ideally overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the custard.

Bake: Remove the plastic wrap and place the dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. If the top is browning too quickly, cover it lightly with foil.

Cool and Serve: Let the dish cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup drizzled over the top.
