Before you dive into mixing your ingredients, it’s crucial to preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Preheating ensures that the puff pastry bakes evenly and achieves that perfect flaky texture. An oven that is not at the right temperature can result in soggy or unevenly cooked pastries. While your oven warms up, you can focus on preparing your apple filling and puff pastry.

Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)

2 large apples (peeled, cored, and diced)

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Optional: powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Apples: In a mixing bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss well to coat the apples evenly. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Roll Out the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smoothen it out. Cut it into 6 equal squares (about 4x4 inches each).

Assemble the Squares: Take one square, and place a generous spoonful of the apple mixture in the center. Fold the corners of the square towards the center, pinching to seal the edges. Repeat for the remaining squares.

Egg Wash and Sugar Sprinkle: Place the assembled squares on the lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish. Lightly sprinkle granulated sugar over each square for added sweetness and crunch.

Bake in the Oven: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the squares from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm as a delightful treat!
