Ingredients

For the Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

For the Streusel Topping:

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.

Make the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are fine.

Prepare the Streusel Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the streusel. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until crumbly. If using, stir in the chopped nuts until evenly distributed.

Assemble the Cake: Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle half of the streusel topping over the batter. Pour the remaining batter on top, and then sprinkle the rest of the streusel evenly over the top.

Bake: Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature. Pair with a hot cup of coffee for the ultimate experience!
