Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slices of Swiss cheese

4 slices of rye bread (or your choice of bread)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided

1 tablespoon olive oil

Optional: Additional toppings like pickles or mustard

Instructions

Prepare the Onion: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown. This brings out their natural sweetness.

Form the Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into two patties, making them slightly larger than the bread, as they will shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking, allowing it to melt.

Toast the Bread: While the patties are cooking, heat another skillet over medium heat. Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of bread. Once the skillet is hot, place the bread slices buttered-side down. Toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Once the bread is toasted, place one cheesy patty on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread. Top with the caramelized onions, and if desired, add pickles or mustard. Place the remaining bread on top with the buttered side facing up.

Grill the Sandwich: In the same skillet, carefully place the assembled sandwiches. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula. This will help create a golden crust and melt the cheese.

Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice them in half, and serve immediately with your choice of sides.
