Ingredients

12 oz. penne pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (reserve some for garnish)

Optional: 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes for heat

Extra cheese for topping (mozzarella and Parmesan)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and cook the penne pasta until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir in the dried oregano, sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Make it Creamy: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. Mix well until the cheese has melted into the sauce. Add the chopped fresh basil and mix again.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked penne pasta with the creamy tomato sauce until evenly coated.

Assemble the Bake: Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the top generously with mozzarella cheese and extra Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with remaining fresh basil leaves before serving.

Serve: Slice and serve warm, paired with a simple green salad or garlic bread for a delightful family meal!
