Ingredients

For the Burger:

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp Italian seasoning

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices of mozzarella cheese

8 slices of pepperoni

1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini)

4 whole wheat burger buns

Olive oil for frying

For the Pizza Sauce:

1 cup canned crushed tomatoes

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

For Toppings:

1/2 cup sliced black olives (optional)

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Pizza Sauce:

    - In a small saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, oregano, garlic powder, sugar, salt, and pepper.

      - Simmer over low heat for about 15 minutes to meld the flavors. Set aside.

        Make the Burger Patties:

          - In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.

            - Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each.

              Cook the Mushrooms:

                - Heat a skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they are golden and tender. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Remove from skillet and set aside.

                  Cook the Burger Patties:

                    - In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed and place the burger patties. Cook for 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip.

                      - Top each patty with 2 slices of pepperoni and a slice of mozzarella cheese. Cover the skillet to melt the cheese (about another 3-4 minutes).

                        Assemble the Burger:

                          - Toast the burger buns in the skillet or toaster until golden brown.

                            - Spread a generous amount of pizza sauce on the bottom half of each bun.

                              - Place the cheesy pepperoni-topped burger on top of the sauce.

                                - Add a layer of sautéed mushrooms and, if desired, sliced black olives.

                                  Finish the Burger:

                                    - Top with more pizza sauce and sprinkle with red pepper flakes if desired, then place the top half of the bun on each burger.

                                      - Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor.

                                        Serve:

                                          - Serve immediately with a side of homemade fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal!
