Ingredients

1 medium green cabbage, thinly sliced

2 medium onions, thinly sliced (yellow or sweet onions work best)

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (optional for tanginess)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Heat the pan: In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted and starts to bubble.

Sauté onions: Add the sliced onions to the pan and sauté them for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and translucent.

Add cabbage: Incorporate the sliced cabbage into the pan. Stir well to combine with the onions.

Caramelize: Sprinkle the brown sugar over the cabbage and onions. This will help to enhance their sweetness and facilitate caramelization. Continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cabbage is tender and has a nice golden-brown caramelized color.

Add balsamic vinegar: For an extra layer of flavor, drizzle the balsamic vinegar over the mixture in the last 3 minutes of cooking. Stir well to combine.

Season and serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and transfer the caramelized cabbage and onions to a serving dish. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.

Enjoy: Serve warm as a side dish, on top of sandwiches, or as a delicious filling for tacos!
