Ingredients

1 medium head of green cabbage, thinly sliced

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional for tanginess)

Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prep the Vegetables: Begin by removing the outer leaves of the cabbage, cutting it into quarters, and slicing it thinly. Do the same for the onions, ensuring both are evenly sliced to allow for uniform cooking.

Heat the Fat: In a large skillet or sauté pan, combine the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Allow the butter to melt and slightly bubble but not brown.

Sauté Onions: Add the sliced onions to the pan. Stir them frequently and cook until they are soft and beginning to caramelize, about 10-15 minutes. Make sure they don't burn; lower the heat if necessary.

Add Cabbage and Seasoning: Once the onions are golden, add the sliced cabbage to the pan, stirring to combine. Sprinkle the brown sugar, salt, and black pepper over the cabbage mixture. Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.

Cook and Stir: Continue to cook the cabbage and onion mixture, stirring occasionally, for another 20-25 minutes. The cabbage should be tender and caramelized; if it sticks to the pan, add a splash of water or broth.

Finish with Vinegar: If using, drizzle the apple cider vinegar over the mixture and stir well to blend the flavors. Allow everything to cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Serve: Transfer the caramelized cabbage and onions to a serving dish. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives, if desired. Enjoy this sweet and savory dish warm!
