Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

6 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and sliced)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crumble Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans)

For Serving:

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Toss well until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading the apples out evenly.

Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well. Add the cold, cubed butter to the mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using nuts, fold them in at this stage.

Assemble the Crumble: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish. Make sure to cover the apples completely for the best texture.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are bubbly and the topping is golden brown. If the topping begins to brown too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil.

Cool & Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the crumble to cool slightly for about 10 minutes. Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
