Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Toss to coat the apples evenly in the mixture and set aside for about 15 minutes.

Cook the Apples: In a 10-12 inch cast-iron skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the apple mixture and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples begin to soften and the mixture is fragrant. Remove from heat.

Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, mix the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Assemble the Dish: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the cooked apples in the skillet.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

Cool Slightly and Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
